I walk to the back of the kitchen, carrying trays as I see our Cleaning lady, Mrs. Mili, walk towards me. She is so small, and so short, as she reaches for the trays in my hand she says a long statement to me in Spanish. I try and tell her how I don’t know much Spanish. I say, “Pequino habla Espanol.” She then replies again in Spanish, something I definitely will not be able to make out or understand. I then say the only thing I know to say, “No entiendo” Which means “I do not understand.” I think of how, sadly, two years of Spanish just isn’t enough for this moment. Standing there awkwardly she does her best to explain how she knows little to no English. And instead of being frustrated and walking away, she leans forward smiling, she gives me a strong sturdy hug, and kisses my cheek.
The motive she had to love and put aside her differences was a beautiful thing. It moved me. Throughout the day I observed her, and she seemed to always be moving and caring in love towards others. What would happen if we all, for one day, put aside our differences and loved each other unconditionally? What would it look like if we, as individuals, took a small step to love one another each day? How would our hearts and motives change day by day? How much of a difference would it be? To love all cultures, languages, and walk with love. I dare you to try one day. I know how hard it is. But if we put aside our differences and focused on only loving others, day by day, the difference in our surroundings would be unimaginably noticeable.
